Materials Specific Details
Original typed manuscript of poem, with early text and several revisions in Frost's hand. The present offering includes two typed papes on letter size paper, numbered "1" and "2" along with several changes in wording and punctuation in Frost's hand using a fountain pen. Frost has signed the poem and inscribed it: "For the Corbins / after best kind of a mental time with them / Oct 12-15 in the falling gold of the year". While the year is not noted on the inscription, it is known that Frost made his second visit to the Corbins during this time in 1961 for the centennial celebration of the City of Lake Forest. The present offering represents an uncommon witness of Frost's creative process. This poem was earlier used as his Christmas greeting for 1953 without the corrections and revisions present here, but did not appear in book form until the publication of IN THE CLEARING (Holt, 1962) with yet further revisions to the text. The two typed pages are in fine condition, and matted together using archival quality materials. Also included is a large invitation to a poetry reading and lecture to be given by Frost at Lake Forest Academy "in celebration of our City's One Hundredth Birthday" that is specially signed by Frost with the inscription "in admiration of a real school" in fountain pen ink. A truly unique offering.
