Biographical / Historical

In 1956 the Executive Council of the General Ministerial Assembly created The Division of General Service to handle and manage relationships both with the public and within the organization, to coordinate national church work and create planning for cooperative action for the Church of God. In 1966 the Division of General Service put together a 7-person committee to begin coming up with ideas for the centennial celebration of the Church of God, and in the 1970s the Division coordinated the Church of God’s participation in a renewed push for evangelism. In 1975 the Division of General Service started the process to involve the church in a church growth movement. The Division of General Service was also tasked to prepare and distribute the necessary guidelines for conducting a consultation on doctrine that would allow mutual discussions among the leaders of faith in the Church of God in 1970. Between 1999 and 2000, the Division of General Service was folded into an outreach ministries team under the direction of the General Director.
